am i trying

2019

~ 20 minutes

sound performance, steel hex rod, plywood, tube tvs, cassette tapes, tape players, mixer, headphones, video, plants, rugs, lights, cast iron singing bowl, copper chimes

my senior thesis at miad; a sound playground.

there is a general structure to the performance, though it is primarily improvised.

the audio through the headphones consists of two sets of tapes -

  1. (eight) tape loops, each playing a different pitch of a c major scale

  2. (five) five-minute tapes of myself, iterating on different melodies.
each tape is one continuous take

gallery night performance

there are three audio tracks playing here -

  1. the documenting camera's recording of the room

  2. three tape players, running through a mixer and into an audio recorder
(this is playing through the headphones)

  3. the background video, which is synchronized with the tv below the mixer

after some mishaps with transportation, these big boys ended up on the free section of craigslist. the largest one is living in the yard seen above. i believe this is a b&b in merrill park, owned by a lovely woman named sherrie with a red pickup truck.

i am pretty sure wilhelm has the next largest one, and i have the smallest (the only one that fits through a doorway, or in a car).

the rest are out in the world.

i hope to meet them again

more performance videos to come
